This is part 2 of our New things coming to Walt Disney World in 2016 post. We will look at what’s new this year at Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and the newly named Disney Springs. Lets get started with part 2.
Disney announced that the original opening date for Rivers of Light was April 22, unfortunately due to technical difficulties this is no longer the case. However it will premier later this year. Temporarily until Rivers of Light is ready, a show called The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic will take its place. The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic is inspired by Disney’s hit live-action film “The Jungle Book” and will have music and special effects. This show celebrates the new film and the classic songs, but is now infused with more Indian influence.
Another new thing is a nighttime version of Kilimanjaro Safaris called Kilimanjaro Safaris After Dark. While riding at night you will be able to see two new nocturnal animals, hyenas and African wild dogs. There will also be new lights that make it look like the sun is setting over the Savannah.
Another new nighttime experience is the Tree of Life Awakenings. These awakenings will feature projections on the Tree of Life that will tell a story about an animal. There will be music and sound to go with these stories and will happen a few times a night and will feature a different animal each time.
A new restaurant is also opening up on Memorial Day weekend called Tiffins. Tiffins is a table service restaurant that will serve lunch and dinner. there will be a Nomad Lounge with waterfront views that doesn’t require a reservation to eat at. Here is some concept art for it:
Animal Kingdom is also getting two new nighttime entertainment experiences. They are called Harambe Wildlife Parti and Discovery Island Carnivale. At Harambe Wildlife Parti, you can enjoy some African music and explore the local marketplace to try some exotic foods and drinks. You can also enjoy the Discovery Island Carnivale on Discovery Island and join the local community in their celebration of love of nature in this party that features music, stilt walkers, dancers, food and more.
All of these things at Animal Kingdom will open on Memorial Day weekend when the park will start its new longer hours.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Recently we talked a little about the new things at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land, but here is a recap of everything new for this year. The new things are Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular, Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away stage show, the re-imagined Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple, Star Wars Launch Bay, Celebrity Spotlight, and Mickey and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams.
Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular is a new fireworks show with lazers, fireworks, and projections. This is also set to the John Williams score from the movies. The projections for this show are clips from all seven Star Wars films and will be projected onto the Chinese Theater and its adjacent buildings.
Star Wars: A Galaxy Far, Far Away stage show happens on Center Stage and recreates iconic moments from the films. It features Kylo Ren, R2-D2, BB-8, C3PO, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Darth Maul and others.
Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple is the re-imagined Jedi Training Academy show. It is the same layout of the show but has a little bigger stage that looks like it came out of the new movie. Another new thing to this show is it features Kylo Ren and the Seventh Sister Inquisitor.
Star Wars Launch Bay is where you canmeet Chewbacca and Kylo Ren. You can also preview things to come in the Star Wars universe, and even see props from the movies. And you can watch Star Wars: Path of the Jedi to hear what has happened in the Star Wars Saga. There is also an area to try new Star Wars video games.
Celebrity Spotlight is a meet and greet area that will feature one of Disney’s new characters, and will change characters from time to time. The first character is Olaf from Frozen.
Mickey and Minnie Starring in Red Carpet Dreams is where you are able to meet with Mickey and Minnie Mouse separately. Mickey will be dressed as Sorcerer Mickey from Fantasia. And Minnie will be dressed as someone from Tinsel Town.
Downtown Disney is now officially called Disney Springs. Disney Springs is made up of three “neighborhoods”. The neighborhoods open are The Landing, Marketplace, West Side, and the newest is Town Center. Town Center opened yesterday, May 15, and has more than 30 new stores/restaurants. Not every store is open but most of them are. Planet Hollywood is still closed and will open this year as the Planet Hollywood Observa
